Creative And Hilarious Doormats

Most people only see doormats as something to wipe their feet on, but if you really think about it, doormats hold a higher purpose - they're the first thing that people see before entering your home. Your grandma's tacky 'welcome' mat probably doesn't reflect you as a person, however, so we've compiled a selection of alternatives that should be a little more up to snuff. Though the mail carrier might be a little caught-off-guard the next time they arrive at your doorstep, at least you'll sleep easy knowing that your mat is a hundred times more honest than any of that 'home sweet home' nonsense.

Now decide which form is needed in these 8 sentences:
  • 1. You ___ not be late again or you’ll lose your job.

  • 2. You ___ start waking up earlier.

  • 3. Why are you so late?! You ___ arrived sooner.

  • 4. John is late again, he ___ gotten here 30 minutes ago.

  • 5. The movie’s going to start soon, we ___ leave soon or we’ll miss it.

  • 6. I saw a really great action movie last night, you ___ see it.

  • 7. I studied hard for the test this week, I ___ be able to pass it.

  • 8. Dad said he'd punish you he caught you drunk again. You ___ not do it again.

Why People Get Tattoos

Jack is getting a tattoo on his legJack lay, quiet and unmoving, for thirty minutes while a stranger repeatedly stabbed him with sharp needles, causing blood to pour steadily out of his leg. Jack was getting a tattoo. His friend Tony had recently gotten a tattoo, and Jack was so impressed by Tony's bravery and his tattoo that he decided to get one too. Getting a tattoo because your friends and peers have them is just one of the reasons why a lot of young people in North America get tattoos. Peer pressure, media influence, and personal expression are some of the common reasons for wearing tattoos today.

The desire to be part of a group, to be accepted by one's friends or peers, can have a great influence on what a person does. Sometimes, wearing a tattoo can be a sign that you belong to a certain group. Gangs often use special clothes and tattoos to identify their particular group. For example, in one gang all the members may wear green army jackets and have large 'Xs' tattooed on their arms. It is not only gangs that have this type of special 'uniform'. Young people often belong to a certain group of friends. Some of these groups wear only brand-name clothes. Some wear only black clothes. Others wear tattoos. When a person's friends are all doing something, such as getting a tattoo, that person is more likely to do the same thing, and get a tattoo too.

The media is another big influence behind the popularity of tattoos in North America. A wide variety of media images show tattoos. Tattoos can be seen on people appearing in commercials selling expensive cars. Famous sports heroes with tattoos are shown in magazines. Fashion models are often seen in magazines and on TV wearing designer clothes that show their bodies tattooed with detailed and colourful patterns. These media images link tattoos to ideas of wealth, success, and status. As a result, many people decide to get a tattoo for its fashion and status value.

It is not always the influence of other people or the media that results in a person getting a tattoo. Many people decide to wear tattoos in order to express their artistic nature, their beliefs, or their feelings -- in other words, to show their individuality. A musician in a rock band may get a tattoo of a guitar on the arm. Some environmentalists may tattoo pictures of endangered animals on their shoulders. Lovers may tattoo each others' names over their hearts. A tattoo can be a public sign to show what is important in a person's life.

As you can see, there are many reasons why young North Americans get tattoos. A tattoo can be part of a group's uniform. It can be a sign of fashion. It can be an expression of individuality. The decision to get a tattoo is most often a result of the influence of friends or media or the desire to express oneself. For Jack, it was a mixture of all three.

These two words get almost the same sense but can be get different interpretation. I saw a picture of the traveller Mike Horn who wrote behind his picture "Alone but not lonely". I think he wanted to say "i went in this special place alone, with my own way, but i'm not lonely because there are lots of animals and vegetables all around me, and i can feel it". So be lonely is a feeling, negative most of the time. You can feel good alone, for example i like to go to the cinema alone, but i don't feel lonely because other persons go the see the movie alone, or because i just have to watch the film, i don't need to speak with somebody... Twice a week i have English lesson alone but i'm not lonely because i talk to you behind my laptop.

To MAKE someone DO something .../ To HAVE/GET something DONE ..

Let's compare :
1) Antony made his sister work.
2) Antony had his young sister driven home.
In sentence 1, the verb in the infinitive has an active meaning  :  The young sister has acted ! She has worked !
In sentence 2, the verb in the infinitive has passive meaningThe young sister has endured the action ! She was driven home.

Once that distinction between active and passive has been made and understood, things are becoming much simpler !

The subject of the sentence and of the main verb (make) is initiating the action, but not doing it himself/herself.
In the United States, and in other countries, or regions, 'make' is often replaced by 'have' in that construction : He had his brother come too late.
The construction with 'to make', often implies a coercive nuance :
ex : I will make you work ! (= Otherwise you wouldn't !)
In the passive form, this construction needs a complete infinitive  => to be made to do something
ex : He was made to hand over the money = He was forced to give the money back.

2) With a passive meaning use TO GET/HAVE  something DONE : = Subject + get/have + object + past participle
ex : My parents got the living-room repainted.
ex : She had her hair cut.
In these two sentences, the actions were passive : The living-room was repainted. The hair was cut. The actions were reallyendured.
The attention is focused on the action and its result.
ex : Mom will have her dishwasher fixed because Dad can't do it himself.
ex : In my village, they had a new school built.
ex : I will have/get my car repaired as soon as I have enough money.

3) Many cases are exceptions ... (alas!) and will have to be learnt because they don't obey the 2 rules !
ex : to grow flowers or vegetables ; to keep somebody waiting ; to be run over (by a car); to get oneself invited ; and especially :
to make oneself understood/ heard/ obeyed/ respected ...

Now, it's your turn to decide whether you'll use one expression or the other in the following sentences ... Go for it !

1. After his operation, he wanted to get up, but the nurse  in bed for the whole day !

2. I must . I'll take Fast to the vet's this afternoon.

3. During that long investigation, some suspects . I don't think we'll know the truth one day...
4. Shouldn't I . It really looks old-fashioned.

5. That film was too sad. It  her eyes out...

6. A road congestion  late for that important meeting. Nothing could be done !

7. I need bookshelves : I'll  by our handyman !

8. What do you think of our teacher's lessons ? They  ! What a bore !...

9. This novel is excellent. It's a real page-turner... Why don't you  ?

10. I don't want you punished... Therefore, I'll  your room before
Mom is back !
